Contributing to the software

P-GRADE portal version 2.9.1 is the core release of the software. This release is developed by an open alliance which is coordinated by MTA SZTAKI. Any institute or individual who is interested in extending the capabilities of P-GRADE Portal 2.9.1 or creating customized portals based on P-GRADE Portal 2.9.1, is invited to join the Developer Alliance. The Developer Alliance is using the P-GRADE Portal project space on Sourceforge to coordinate efforts. You can join the community, you can get the latest source code, you can contribute to the code through our Sourceforge forum. Please join the community and share our success with P-GRADE Portal!

Since P-GRADE Portal is based on the GridSphere Web portal framework the software can be easily extended with new portlets, can be customized for new communities. Members of the P-GRADE Portal Developer Alliance are supposed to actively upgrade P-GRADE Portal by adding new portlets or further developing the existing ones. The partner who develops a new portlet will take responsibility of supporting that portlet (bug fixing, user support, release updates, etc.). P-GRADE Portal 2.9.1 is under GPL licence. However the partner who develops a new portlet can decide if this code will be open source or proprietary code.

Open topics:

Would you like to join the P-GRADE Portal developer community but do not know what component to work on? The following list of topics contains those developments that would be very useful to accomplish, but due to lack of resources the developer alliance could not do so. Choose a topic and let us know - we will support you during the development in order to get your contribution in the next portal release!
  • Integrating the parameter study execution layer with the DIANE submitter tool. The result would increase job success rate for the end users.
  • Integrate the submitter layer of P-GRADE Portal with the Condor jobmanager. The new system would be able to send jobs into Condor directly, making P-GRADE Portal useful for campus grid environments.
  • Integrate the job submitter and data management layer of P-GRADE Portal with services of the UNICORE middleware. The result would be a portal for D-Grid and other communities that use UNICORE integrator layer.
  • Integration of the scheduling component with EGEE grid monitoring tools, such as GridICE, gStat or SAM. Feedback coming from these systems would make P-GRADE modify job allocation policies, improving job success and throughput rates for the users.
  • Integrate the P-GRADE Portal GUI with a JDL evaluator to ensure correctness of the JDL keywords typed in, speed-up the development process of a workflow based application.

If you are interested in any of these topics or you would like to add new topics, please contact Prof. Péter Kacsuk (kacsuk at sztaki.hu) or Zoltán Farkas (zfarkas at sztaki.hu).
